It has a protective inside, it sounds different if you remove it (it sounds softer with it on and louder if you remove the protection!)
It comes in a protected small box, the paper may be blent but don't worry, it's material is flexible enough so if you blend it a bit to the other side or if you leave it under some books for a while it'll be completly okay!

Impulsively bought one and I have to say absolutely no regrets, the box it came in was lovely, good amount of bubblewrap to keep safe too. The sound is so pleasant, even with the rod still covered to muffle it slightly, the paper does come bent (not creased) but its nothing a book can't fix. Would absolutely recommend if you're considering!
